Barbara A. James, founded Steps Above Security Services, Inc. with 36 years of Law Enforcement experience in California. Over 25 years supervisory experience under her belt, James organized trainings for Law Enforcement Agencies including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Sheriffs Department, and numerous Los Angeles County and South Bay Police agencies. James’ expertise and experience in planning, organizing, and directing law enforcement and security operations within the Police Division gives clients the peace of mind they need knowing that their security operations are in the right hands.

James’ most significant and impactful leadership assignment was serving as Substation Sergeant at the Manchester Square / Airport Belford Substation. In this role, she provided supervisory leadership and operational oversight while acting as a key community liaison between law enforcement, contracted security teams, local residents, business owners, and public stakeholders. She coordinated daily operations, supervised patrol personnel, led incident response efforts, and ensured compliance with departmental standards. James also played a central role in strengthening community trust through proactive engagement, public safety initiatives, interagency coordination, and crime prevention strategies across the Manchester Square and Airport corridor. Her work emphasized accountability, de-escalation, mentorship, and clear communication, particularly during high-risk incidents and complex community concerns.
